High above highways, rivers and open landscapes, the bright orange spheres seen on some power lines serve a very specific purpose: they help aircraft spot cables that can be difficult to detect from the air.

Why they matter

These devices are officially known as aviation marker balls or spherical markers. They do not improve electricity flow or change how the grid works. Instead, they act as highly visible warnings for pilots flying at low altitude, especially near valleys, airports, helicopter routes and other areas where visibility can be limited.

The color choice is intentional. Orange stands out strongly against sky, trees and clouds, making the lines easier to notice in time. In some cases, red, white or striped versions are used as well, depending on local aviation safety rules.

Built for durability

Most marker balls are about the size of a beach ball and are made from tough plastic or fiberglass. They are designed to withstand sun, wind, rain and snow for years. Because they are made from insulating materials, they do not carry electrical current.

On major transmission routes, power is moved through three main wires, often supported by a higher shield wire that helps guide lightning safely into the ground. The marker balls are added only where low-flying aircraft may need extra visual guidance.

Installation is a specialized task, often carried out by trained crews using helicopters. The markers usually clamp around the wire in two halves, and once in place, they can remain effective for a decade or more with periodic inspections.

Small details like these show how infrastructure can blend engineering and safety design. In the future, smarter visibility systems may make airspace and power networks even more coordinated.
