Joby Aviation has completed a more than 3,100-mile autonomous journey across the United States, marking a significant milestone for its aircraft automation platform. The company said the flight was conducted without a human pilot taking operational control at any stage.
A converted Cessna Caravan carried out autonomous taxiing, takeoff, navigation and landing procedures while being remotely supervised from Joby facilities in California and South Carolina. A pilot remained on board to meet operational compliance requirements, while the aircraft's systems handled the mission.
From urban air taxis to wider aviation applications
Known primarily for its electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft designed for short urban journeys, Joby is also building an autonomy platform that can be integrated into conventional aircraft. The cross-country operation demonstrated how this technology could support regional cargo services, medical logistics and other specialized air operations.
The company plans to continue the aircraft's route back toward the West Coast, including scheduled stops in Louisville and Salt Lake City. The extended program is intended to test autonomous operations across changing terrain, airspace environments and weather conditions.
Joby is simultaneously advancing certification work for its all-electric air taxi with the Federal Aviation Administration. Its broader autonomy program has also received support through a $17 million contract with AFWERX, the innovation arm of the U.S. Air Force.
The flight highlights a future in which certified autonomous systems could help make air transport more flexible, efficient and accessible across regional networks.
