The innovative Berlin-based startup Periwinkle is paving the way for users eager to escape the confines of centralized social media platforms dominated by major tech companies. Rather than opting for decentralized networks like Mastodon or Bluesky, Periwinkle empowers individuals to create social media accounts on their own domains, granting them full control.

Leveraging the AT Protocol, the same open-source framework that drives the alternative social platform Bluesky, Periwinkle provides essential infrastructure for users to manage their own social media presence.

This means users can establish accounts on their own domains, whether on Bluesky or through tailored hosted solutions for specific organizations or communities. Periwinkle facilitates domain purchases and enables users to store their data--including posts, followers, and profiles--on their own Personal Data Server (PDS), integral to the AT Protocol ecosystem.

Periwinkle streamlines the transition for non-technical users, alleviating the burden of server setup and maintenance. The company ensures that user servers are consistently updated, backed up, and monitored, allowing individuals to concentrate on engaging with their social media.

According to Periwinkle's founder, Charles Blumenthal, "We'll be the first-to-market fully managed PDS service; there is nobody else that is doing this right now." While alternatives exist, such as Blacksky, Periwinkle distinguishes itself by focusing on user-friendly social media management.

Blumenthal, a former software engineer at McKinsey, conceived this idea upon realizing that many potential users were unaware of the advantages offered by the AT Protocol. He emphasizes the importance of user autonomy in social media, stating, "It's really not a great idea that a couple of billionaires have control over the way billions of people communicate."

The growing popularity of Bluesky, which has surpassed 43 million registered users, indicates a significant demand for such offerings. Blumenthal envisions a future where individuals prioritize ownership of their personal data over reliance on corporate entities.

Periwinkle offers various pricing plans, starting at $4 per month for a Basic Plan, which includes support for five accounts and 5 GB of storage. Higher-tier options provide additional storage and features, with a free plan available for those wishing to explore the service.

This model is particularly beneficial for users seeking enhanced control over their social media accounts, such as public figures or businesses. As Periwinkle develops, it plans to introduce more tools, including automated post deletion and archiving capabilities.

Currently self-funded, Blumenthal is exploring opportunities with investors in Europe and aims to expand his team in the future to enhance the company's growth and outreach.
