On Tuesday morning, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth will meet with Anthropic's CEO, Dario Amodei, at the Pentagon to discuss the potential military applications of the AI model, Claude.
This meeting arises amid concerns that the Pentagon may label Anthropic as a "supply chain risk," a classification typically associated with foreign adversaries. This designation follows Anthropic's decision to decline the Department of Defense's request to utilize its technology for mass surveillance of American citizens and for the development of autonomous weaponry.
Last summer, Anthropic secured a significant $200 million contract with the Department of Defense. Notably, Claude was reportedly utilized during a high-stakes special operations raid on January 3, which led to the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. This incident has heightened tensions between the two entities.
According to sources, Hegseth is presenting Amodei with a clear ultimatum: comply with military demands or face severe consequences. While it remains uncertain if this is merely a bluff, replacing Anthropic would be a complex and resource-intensive task for the Pentagon. A supply chain risk designation could jeopardize Anthropic's contract and compel other defense partners to cease using Claude altogether.
