Patreon is taking a stronger stance on how its creator content can be used by artificial intelligence systems. The membership platform said it is now working with Cloudflare to actively block AI bots that attempt to scrape material for model training without permission.
The company noted that its earlier approach, introduced in 2023, relied on standard web instructions such as robots.txt. But as scraping methods have become more advanced, Patreon says that approach is no longer enough. New discovery features, including a redesigned Home Feed and Quips, also made stronger protections more important.
With Cloudflare's AI Crawl Control, Patreon is updating its enforcement tools and moving from requests to direct restrictions. The platform said testing showed weekly access attempts from some AI crawlers dropping from thousands to zero after the new measures were applied.
Patreon will still permit bots that index pages for search and help direct users back to the platform. The company says the goal is to preserve discoverability while giving creators more control over how their work is used.
Patreon product chief Drew Rowny said creators should have a real voice in how AI systems interact with their work. The move reflects a broader shift across the web as publishers look for clearer rules around content access, attribution, and value exchange.
As AI platforms continue to expand, creator-first controls like these may help shape a more balanced digital ecosystem in the years ahead.
