Cloudflare is acquiring Deno, the company behind the Deno programming runtime, to advance its Workers platform for building and running software across Cloudflare's network.
Deno was co-founded by Bert Belder and Node.js creator Ryan Dahl. Its recent open-source project, celld, offers an implementation of the Workers model. Cloudflare says it sees open-source development and flexibility for developers as valuable parts of its platform strategy.
Dahl said Deno's team will join Cloudflare to help make the Workers programming model a mainstream option for building server applications. The financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.
Combining Deno's runtime experience with Cloudflare's global network could help make edge-based software development more accessible and adaptable.
