Paris Raid Uncovers Stolen Picasso Canvas Valued at Up to $17 Million

A police operation in the Paris suburb of Champigny-sur-Marne led to an unexpected art-world discovery: a stolen Pablo Picasso canvas, reportedly worth between $13.7 million and $17.1 million.

The painting has not yet been formally identified, but it is believed to portray Picasso's muse and partner Marie-Thérèse Walter. According to reports, the work belongs to a collector in Singapore and was allegedly taken from an art storage facility in Paris by an employee who said the act was meant to expose security weaknesses.

During the same raid, officers also recovered cannabis resin, cash, and luxury clothing. Four people were brought in for questioning, and the case moved to an initial court appearance on Friday, with a trial provisionally expected in August.

The episode also highlights Picasso's enduring influence in the global art market, where his works continue to set benchmark prices and attract international attention. As art protection systems evolve, such recoveries may help shape stronger safeguards for cultural assets in the future.
