OpenAI has reportedly acquired Glass Imaging in a deal valued at more than $300 million, marking another step in the company's push beyond software and into hardware, according to the report.
Founded in 2019 in Los Altos, California, Glass Imaging was built by former Apple engineers Ziv Attar and Tom Bishop, both of whom helped develop Portrait Mode. Their startup focuses on using AI to improve smartphone photography at the source, rather than applying edits after a picture is taken.
At the core of the company's approach are neural networks trained to understand the behavior of specific camera systems. This allows devices to produce sharper, more refined images in real time, even within the physical limits of compact smartphone hardware.
The move also fits into OpenAI's broader hardware ambitions, which have included reports of work on phones, earbuds, and companion devices. It follows the company's earlier collaboration with Jony Ive on a device venture, underscoring a growing interest in combining AI, design, and consumer technology.
If the acquisition is completed, it could help accelerate a new generation of intelligent devices where imaging, interaction, and design work together more seamlessly.
