The world's extra-polar oceans reached an average surface temperature of 21.1°C on August 22, marking the highest daily reading ever recorded in the modern dataset. The figure is notable not only for its level, but also for its timing: oceans usually peak in March or April, not in late August.
The new benchmark narrowly surpassed the previous record of 21.09°C set in March 2024. The measurement comes from the European Union's Copernicus Climate Change Service, which monitors ocean temperatures between 60°S and 60°N using long-term climate records that date back to 1979.
El Niño adds to a warmer baseline
Scientists say the latest spike reflects more than a short-term climate pattern. El Niño can temporarily raise global temperatures by shifting heat across the tropical Pacific, but it is now unfolding on top of a planet that has already warmed for decades. That combination is helping push ocean temperatures into unprecedented territory.
Researchers have also noted that the scale of the record may place it among the warmest ocean conditions of the Holocene, although comparisons with ancient climates remain difficult because past temperatures must be reconstructed indirectly.
Why the record matters
Warmer oceans are reshaping marine life and the wider climate system. Heat stress can trigger coral bleaching, reduce habitat quality for species such as kelp forests, and affect fisheries that support coastal communities. At the same time, warmer water can feed the atmosphere with extra moisture and energy, influencing storm intensity and rainfall patterns.
Ocean warming also makes it harder for seawater to absorb carbon dioxide efficiently, weakening one of Earth's natural climate buffers. Data from NOAA's Physical Sciences Laboratory showed that 37% of the global ocean experienced marine heatwaves in July 2026, the second-highest monthly extent on record since 1991.
Experts say the path forward includes faster emissions cuts and stronger protection for marine ecosystems such as mangroves, marshes, coral reefs and kelp beds. As global conservation targets move toward 2030, this record underscores how closely ocean health and climate stability are now linked.
