Nvidia is deepening its role in the AI hardware ecosystem with a $3.5 billion investment in MediaTek, a move designed to support custom chip development for AI companies and cloud-scale operators.
Under the partnership, MediaTek will use Nvidia technology to build tailored chips that can connect directly into Nvidia-based data centers. The collaboration also gives MediaTek access to NVLink Fusion, enabling faster communication between chips across large-scale AI systems.
The strategy reflects a broader shift in the industry, as major AI labs and cloud providers increasingly design their own silicon to better match specific workloads. Nvidia is positioning itself not only as a chip supplier, but as an infrastructure platform that can support both standard GPUs and custom processors.
Nvidia executive Dion Harris described the company as an AI infrastructure business, noting that its platform has expanded beyond pure computing chips. The partnership also builds on Nvidia's recent collaboration with Amazon Web Services, which is set to deploy additional Nvidia GPUs and integrate NVLink Fusion.
MediaTek, known for its work in smartphones, connected devices, automobiles, and wireless systems, has been growing its custom data center ASIC business and expects it to generate $2 billion in revenue in 2026. The company will also continue working with Nvidia on developer-focused systems such as DGX Spark and RTX Spark, while extending joint efforts in AI-powered vehicles and software-defined mobility.
Jensen Huang said the collaboration aims to bring accelerated computing into new markets and help customers build differentiated AI systems at scale. The partnership points to a future where AI infrastructure becomes more flexible, more connected, and more widely adaptable across industries.
