In a significant leap for the AI infrastructure sector, Nscale, a British company supported by Nvidia, has reached a remarkable valuation of $14.6 billion. This milestone positions Nscale among Europe's newest decacorns, alongside influential firms like Helsing and Mistral AI, amid an escalating demand for data centers capable of delivering AI computing at scale.
Nscale's strategy involves a comprehensive approach to vertical integration, encompassing energy, data centers, and orchestration software. The recent valuation follows a historic $2 billion Series C funding round, touted as the largest in European history. This round includes a pre-Series C SAFE investment of $433 million from prominent backers such as Blue Owl, Dell, Nvidia, and Nokia.
Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan played pivotal roles in this funding, signaling potential preparations for an initial public offering (IPO). CEO Josh Payne has indicated that the company may pursue public listing within this year to bolster its capital reserves.
In tandem with this funding news, Nscale has welcomed esteemed figures to its board, including former Meta COO Sheryl Sandberg, ex-Yahoo president Susan Decker, and former UK deputy prime minister Nick Clegg. Their expertise is expected to enhance Nscale's strategic direction and governance.
Nscale has a history of substantial funding rounds, having previously secured $1.1 billion in a Series B round led by Aker, a public Norwegian entity with interests in energy, which is now co-leading the Series C alongside New York-based 8090 Industries.
Moreover, Nscale's collaboration with Aker has evolved, with the joint venture now fully managed by Nscale. This initiative, dubbed "Stargate Norway," aims to operate with 100,000 Nvidia GPUs by the end of 2026, with OpenAI as an initial client.
Øyvind Eriksen, president and CEO of Aker, emphasized that this transition will enhance execution and governance while maintaining continuity for existing projects. Last October, Nscale also expanded its partnership with Microsoft, planning to deploy around 200,000 Nvidia GPUs across three European data centers and one in the U.S., in collaboration with Dell.
With the new funding, Nscale is poised to accelerate its AI infrastructure development across Europe, North America, and Asia. This includes expanding its engineering and operations teams while reinforcing its platform.
Additionally, Nscale secured a $1.4 billion delayed draw term loan to finance its GPU clusters, aiming to meet the rising enterprise demand and utilize low-cost renewable energy. The company is committed to reusing waste heat, developing local skills, and investing in regional infrastructure as part of the Stargate Norway initiative.
This transformative growth trajectory signals a promising future for Nscale as it continues to lead in AI infrastructure, potentially reshaping the landscape of data center operations globally.
