New Subway Mural in Brooklyn Brightens Commuters' Journey

The bustling Borough Hall subway station in Brooklyn has welcomed a vibrant new addition, making the daily commute a bit more delightful. Artist Ruby Onyinyechi Amanze has unveiled her mosaic titled "May Your Road Be Light and Fun" (2026), which stretches an impressive 110 feet along the corridor connecting the 2, 3, 4, and 5 subway lines.

Announced by MTA Arts & Design on May 28, this collaborative project with Miotto Mosaic Art Studios, located just north of New York City, transforms Amanze's sketches into a stunning array of glazed and matte ceramic tiles. The artwork brings to life around 50 of Amanze's drawings from 2012 onwards, combining elements of mosaic and collage.

"May Your Road Be Light and Fun" features a variety of motifs, including swimming, aliens, birds, bicycles, architecture, and leopard-headed figures, all set against a backdrop that mimics a blank sheet of parchment. The colorful patchwork showcases hues of algae green, ocean blue, gray, and fuchsia, creating a lively atmosphere for commuters.

Amanze's work reflects themes of movement and activity, inspired by her experiences in New York City's dynamic public transit system. Throughout her decade in the city, she observed how the subway facilitated countless journeys, both big and small. "The title embodies movement, journeying, magic, surprise, and delight," she shared in a conversation with Hyperallergic. For Amanze, this mosaic serves as a joyful parallel for city dwellers who are always on the go.

This installation marks Amanze's first public exhibition, a significant milestone for the artist who primarily works on paper. After collaborating with Stephen Miotto, the founder of Miotto Mosaic Art Studios, they successfully translated her two-dimensional drawings into a vibrant mosaic format.

Miotto expressed his hope that the mural would uplift those who pass by. "Maybe this piece will change someone's day," he remarked, feeling fortunate to be part of this project. Amanze echoed this sentiment, noting that her characters often embody happiness in mundane activities, bringing a sense of levity to everyday life.

As urban landscapes continue to evolve, such artistic interventions in public spaces not only beautify the environment but also enrich the commuter experience, inspiring a sense of community and joy amid the hustle and bustle of city life.
