The Energy Information Administration (EIA) has announced plans to mandate data centers in the United States to disclose their energy consumption details. This initiative follows a request from Senators Josh Hawley and Elizabeth Warren, who urged the EIA to examine the energy usage of this rapidly growing sector.
This move aims to address the increasing energy demands posed by data centers, which are becoming significant consumers of electricity nationwide. The EIA has not yet established a timeline for the implementation of this new reporting requirement, but it is expected to be a crucial step toward better understanding and managing energy consumption in the industry.
In March, the EIA began a pilot survey involving 196 companies located in Texas, Washington State, and the Washington D.C.-Northern Virginia metropolitan area. Following this, a second pilot survey was announced in April, targeting three additional states. EIA chief Tristan Abbey anticipates that these pilot surveys will conclude in September, paving the way for the development of the comprehensive mandatory survey.
By gathering this data, the EIA aims to create a clearer picture of energy consumption across data centers, which could lead to more informed policy decisions and strategies for energy management in the future.
