Mitchell Johnson Unveils Personal Color Exhibition at Galerie Mercier, Paris

American artist Mitchell Johnson showcases his latest collection of 25 intimate paintings at Galerie Mercier in Paris, just a short stroll from Edward Hopper's historic residence. This solo exhibition, titled Mitchell Johnson: Personal Color (Selected Small Paintings 1988-2026), reflects his ongoing fascination with color, form, and dimension.

Drawing inspiration from celebrated figures like Hopper and Hans Hofmann, Johnson's work has been shaped by numerous visits to Paris and Cape Cod, both of which have significantly influenced his artistic journey. Hofmann, a pivotal figure in American Modernism, introduced the principles of the School of Paris to the U.S., fostering a rich dialogue between American and European art.

During his time at Parsons School of Design in the 1980s, Johnson learned under the guidance of Hofmann's former students, including notable artists such as Paul Resika and Jane Freilicher. This mentorship has played a crucial role in developing his unique painting style and vision. Through this exhibition, Johnson aims to highlight the enduring legacy of Hofmann's teachings and their relevance in today's American art scene.

The exhibition will run from February 28 to March 21, 2026, with an opening reception scheduled for February 28 from 3 to 5 PM (CET). Additionally, an artist talk with Johnson is set for March 14 from 2 to 3 PM (CET).

Johnson's artwork is part of over 700 private collections and is featured in the permanent collections of 40 museums. His past retrospectives have been held at the Bakersfield Museum of Art and the Musee Villa Les Camelias in Cap d'Ail, France. Currently, two of his large-scale paintings are on display in San Francisco through early April.
