A significant incident occurred at the opening of Michael Joo's exhibition, "Sweat Models 1991-2006," held on February 20 at Space ZeroOne in New York. A large sculpture titled Saltiness of Greatness collapsed, reportedly due to an accident involving a visitor, resulting in minor injuries to four individuals.

The injured included a Korean artist, a gallery owner, a university curator, and a board member of the Hanwha Foundation. They were promptly taken to the hospital for treatment of injuries, which included a hairline fracture and various abrasions.

In a statement, a representative from the Hanwha Foundation expressed regret over the unexpected event, emphasizing their commitment to ensuring visitor safety. They indicated that immediate measures were taken at the scene and that a thorough review of the incident is underway to enhance the viewing environment.

Michael Joo, an artist known for integrating organic materials into his work, has often explored themes of transformation and evolution. His sculpture, which consists of compressed salt, has been described as a commentary on historical figures and their energy consumption.

Following the incident, the gallery, located at 371 Broadway in Tribeca, announced it would remain closed through the weekend while they assess the situation. They look forward to reopening safely for the community.

Space ZeroOne, a project of the Hanwha Foundation of Culture, aims to promote contemporary art and has previously showcased emerging Korean artists. The foundation, established in 2007, is also engaged in international collaborations, including a new art museum project with Paris's Centre Pompidou.

Michael Joo's work is well-regarded and included in several prestigious collections, such as the Guggenheim Museum and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. His contributions to the art world were highlighted when he represented South Korea at the Venice Biennale in 2001.

As the art community reflects on this incident, the focus remains on ensuring a safe environment for creativity and expression.
