Microsoft Innovates with New OpenClaw-Inspired Agent

Microsoft is set to enhance its Microsoft 365 Copilot tool with a new agent inspired by OpenClaw, focusing on enterprise security and task automation.

Microsoft Innovates with New OpenClaw-Inspired Agent

Microsoft is exploring the integration of features reminiscent of the OpenClaw agent into its Microsoft 365 Copilot tool. This initiative aims to enhance the experience for enterprise clients by offering improved security measures compared to the well-known open-source OpenClaw.

OpenClaw operates locally on users' devices, enabling the creation of agents that can autonomously perform tasks. If Microsoft successfully develops a similar local agent, it would complement a range of other agent-based tools the company has unveiled recently.

In March, Microsoft introduced Copilot Cowork, which is designed to execute actions within M365 applications rather than merely providing search results or chat functionalities. This tool is powered by the innovative WorkIQ technology, which personalizes the user experience across Microsoft 365 applications.

Additionally, Microsoft has collaborated with Anthropic Claude to enhance Cowork, incorporating Claude as an option for users. While OpenClaw can utilize various models, Claude has emerged as a preferred choice among many users of the open-source project. Notably, Cowork operates in the cloud rather than on local hardware.

In February, Microsoft also launched Copilot Tasks, a new agent aimed at task completion, initially released in preview mode. Marketing materials suggest this agent is tailored for prosumers, capable of handling tasks ranging from email organization to travel arrangements, although it also operates in the cloud.

Details about whether Microsoft's new Claw will function locally or simply incorporate desirable features from OpenClaw remain unclear. However, Microsoft indicated that this agent would effectively be a version of 365 Copilot that operates continuously, capable of executing multi-step tasks over extended periods.

OpenClaw users have predominantly favored the Mac Mini platform, leading to a surge in sales for these compact desktops. This trend suggests that Microsoft may have various motivations, including security, for developing its own version of the agent.

Anticipation is building for a demonstration of this new Claw or an enhanced version of existing tools at the upcoming Microsoft Build conference in June.
