Microsoft is reshaping its AI strategy by bringing its consumer Copilot app and Microsoft 365 Copilot app under one roof. The move reflects a broader shift toward a more streamlined experience, as the company trims features that did not gain strong traction.
According to Microsoft's support guidance, the unified app will replace the separate consumer and business versions, signaling a simpler path for users who move between personal and professional tasks. The change also shows how AI tools are increasingly designed to serve both everyday productivity and workplace workflows in one place.
As part of the transition, several features will be retired by August 18, 2026, including Group Chats, AI-generated podcasts, Copilot Labs experiments, and Deep Research for consumer users. For professional subscribers, Researcher will remain available as an alternative for advanced research tasks.
Microsoft is also removing its animated Copilot character, Mico, while warning that some functions may temporarily disappear during the rollout. Files created in the standalone Copilot app will be moved to OneDrive, keeping user content within Microsoft's ecosystem.
The consolidation places Copilot in line with a wider trend across the AI industry, where major platforms are merging specialized tools into more unified assistants. For Microsoft, the next phase is about clarity, consistency, and stronger everyday value. In the future, this approach could help define how AI assistants become more practical and central to digital life.
