Meta plans to introduce its new virtual reality glasses in spring 2027, taking a different approach from the bulky headsets that have largely defined the category. The device is designed for watching films, following live events and using virtual screens alongside the user's surroundings.
The glasses weigh about 100 grams. Much of the computing power and battery are housed in a separate, 300-gram unit--called a "puck"--connected by a fibre-optic cable. Meta says the system can support up to three hours of continuous high-resolution media playback.
A different role for VR
Rather than focusing primarily on gaming, the glasses will run Meta Horizon OS and draw on its existing collection of apps and experiences. Meta has also announced partnerships with Disney+, Prime Video, YouTube, ESPN and IMAX, pointing to entertainment as a central use case.
At a planned price of US$1,299.99, the glasses are positioned below some premium mixed-reality devices. Their lighter design and familiar eyewear form factor reflect Meta's effort to connect virtual reality with the growing market for wearable technology.
The glasses are not yet an all-in-one pair of everyday spectacles that can switch instantly into virtual reality. Still, combining wearable design with immersive viewing may broaden how people encounter digital content and help shape the next generation of personal displays.
