Meta to Introduce Facial Recognition Feature in Smart Glasses

Meta plans to enhance its smart glasses with a facial recognition feature, allowing users to identify people and access information through AI technology.

Meta to Introduce Facial Recognition Feature in Smart Glasses

According to recent reports, Meta is set to integrate facial recognition technology into its smart glasses, potentially launching this feature within the year. This innovative function, referred to internally as "Name Tag," aims to enable users to recognize individuals and access relevant information via Meta's AI assistant.

The plans outlined by Meta are still subject to change, as the company has been evaluating the implications of introducing a feature that raises concerns regarding safety and privacy.

Initially, there was a strategy to unveil Name Tag at a conference designed for visually impaired attendees before making it publicly available; however, this plan did not materialize.

Interestingly, Meta viewed the current political landscape in the United States as a strategic opportunity for the launch, believing that many civil society organizations that might criticize the feature would be preoccupied with other issues.

In 2021, Meta had contemplated including facial recognition in the inaugural version of its Ray-Ban smart glasses but ultimately decided against it due to technical and ethical challenges. Recent reports indicate that the company has revisited these plans following a shift in the political climate and the surprising success of its smart glasses.
