A major new analysis adds fresh weight to a long-standing scientific conclusion: the MMR vaccine is not associated with autism. Researchers reviewing health records from more than 2.5 million children found no increase in autism diagnoses after a first measles, mumps, and rubella shot before age 2.

What the study examined

The team used the Cosmos electronic health-record database, covering children tracked from 2015 through 2024. They focused on vaccination timing, especially the period between 11.5 and 24 months, when the debate has often centered on whether early childhood immunization overlaps with the first signs of developmental differences.

To reduce timing-related bias, the researchers also applied age-based landmark analyses. Their main finding was clear: children who received their first MMR dose before age 2 did not have a higher chance of an autism diagnosis. The adjusted hazard ratio was 0.97, essentially identical to no difference.

Part of a broader evidence base

This result fits into decades of research that has repeatedly tested the same question. Studies in the United Kingdom, Denmark, and the United States, along with a 2014 meta-analysis in Vaccine and a 2020 Cochrane review, have all found no reliable evidence linking MMR vaccination to autism.

The new paper also arrives at a time when measles prevention remains especially important. Public health agencies continue to emphasize that vaccination is one of the most effective tools for keeping communities protected and maintaining high immunization coverage.

Published ahead of print in The Pediatric Infectious Disease Journal, the study reinforces a message supported by a large scientific record: MMR vaccination remains a cornerstone of early childhood health, and continued trust in evidence-based immunization can shape a safer future for public health.
