Key Highlights for January 28, 2026

1. Soybean and Grain Futures Rise Amid Dollar Weakness

In the latest overnight trading, soybean and grain futures experienced an uptick as the U.S. dollar hovers near a four-year low.

The dollar has seen a decline of 3.8% over the last six months, influenced by ongoing trade tensions and various geopolitical factors. This has led to gold futures reaching new heights as investors look for safe havens.

The weakened dollar has made U.S. agricultural products more affordable for international buyers, enhancing export opportunities.

Recently, undisclosed countries have secured purchases of 110,000 metric tons of corn and 306,000 metric tons of sorghum, all set for delivery in the 2025/2026 marketing year, as reported by the USDA.

Additionally, corn futures received a boost following remarks from President Trump advocating for year-round E15 ethanol blends during a speech in Iowa.

House Speaker Mike Johnson and Senate Majority Leader John Thune are reportedly close to finalizing legislation to approve year-round E15, according to Trump.

For March delivery, soybean futures rose by 10¢ to $10.77¼ per bushel, while soy meal increased by $2.80 to $296.80 per short ton. Soy oil futures also saw a rise of 0.14¢ to 54.55¢ per pound.

Overnight, corn futures climbed 3¼¢ to $4.29¾ per bushel on the Chicago Board of Trade. Wheat futures gained 7¼¢, reaching $5.30½ per bushel, with Kansas City futures increasing by 5¼¢ to $5.38 per bushel.

2. Biofuels Policy Clarity Could Benefit Soybean Sector, Says ASA

A recent report from the American Soybean Association indicates that clearer biofuels policies could significantly bolster the soybean industry.

The growth in biofuel utilization has been a positive development for the soybean sector, although the use of soybean oil for alternative fuel production has seen a near 50% drop.

Scott Gerit, the ASA's chief economist, highlighted that uncertainty surrounding the 45Z Clean Fuel Production Credit and low renewable volume obligations (RVOs) has led many biodiesel facilities to halt operations.

The Environmental Protection Agency has proposed blending levels for 2026 and 2027 but has yet to finalize these regulations.

The proposed changes would increase minimum blending levels by 67% from 2025, which, if implemented, could invigorate biofuel markets and ensure stable demand over the next two years.

According to Gerit's report, this increase could lead to an additional 200 million bushels of soybeans being processed annually to meet the RVOs.

3. Wind Chill Advisory for Indiana and Ohio

The National Weather Service has issued a warning for wind chills in central Indiana and Ohio, with temperatures expected to plummet to minus-20°F tonight into Thursday.

In central Illinois, temperatures are anticipated to drop to around 15-20°F below zero.

The National Weather Service cautioned that such extreme wind chills could result in frostbite on exposed skin within just 30 minutes.

Additionally, freezing fog advisories are in place for parts of eastern Oklahoma and western Arkansas, where visibility may be reduced to a quarter mile, creating hazardous driving conditions.
