Johan Siggesson Captures Majestic 'Big Tuskers' in Kenya

In the realm of African elephants, the term "Big Tuskers" designates male elephants with tusks so immense that they occasionally touch the ground. These remarkable ivory structures can weigh over 100 pounds and grow continuously throughout the elephant's life, with males typically boasting larger tusks than their female counterparts.

However, the impressive size of their tusks makes these gentle giants more susceptible to poaching, as their ivory is highly sought after in illegal markets. Currently, only a few dozen of these magnificent creatures remain in protected areas like Kenya's Tsavo East National Park and Amboseli National Park.

Wilderness photographer Johan Siggesson has dedicated himself to capturing the essence of these elephants through a stunning series of black-and-white photographs taken in Kenya. His work showcases a range of elephants, from playful juveniles to iconic big tuskers such as Craig, who lived from 1972 to 2026, and rising stars like the 35-year-old Michael. Siggesson's photographs reveal the unique anatomy, habitats, and behaviors of these endangered giants.

Art enthusiasts can explore and purchase prints of Siggesson's compelling work, reflecting his passion for wildlife and conservation.
