Jensen Huang's two-day stop in Tokyo on July 15 and 16 highlighted how quickly Japan is positioning itself at the center of the physical AI race. The Nvidia chief met with leading industrial and chip-supply players, and the visit produced a broad set of collaborations spanning AI infrastructure, robotics, and advanced semiconductor materials.

At the heart of the plan is Noetra, Japan's sovereign-AI initiative. Backed by roughly 44 domestic companies, including SoftBank, Sony, NEC and Honda, the project aims to build AI systems designed for robots, vehicles, and factory operations. Tokyo has pledged up to 1 trillion yen over five years to support this effort, while Nvidia is set to provide the computing backbone through a major AI factory expected to go live in 2028.

The roadmap is ambitious: a Japanese-language reasoning model is planned for fiscal 2026, an omni-modal version for 2028, and a "real-world native" AI layer for robots by 2030. The goal is to create software that can move from language understanding to machine control, with domestic developers gaining phased access along the way.

Japan's robotics and manufacturing leaders are also rallying around Nvidia's Cosmos platform. Companies such as Fanuc, Yaskawa, Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Fujitsu, Hitachi, Sony, SoftBank, Kubota and AIRoA are exploring how the model can support intelligent machines. Nvidia also introduced Cosmos 3 Edge, a version built to run directly inside devices through Jetson Thor chips.

Toyota is another key partner, extending its use of Nvidia technology from vehicle systems into factory simulation, software, and traffic-aware driving tools. The company's next-generation cars will use Nvidia's Drive platform for advanced driver assistance features.

The broader vision is clear: Japan wants to pair its manufacturing strength with homegrown AI capability. With major public and private investment underway, the country is building a foundation for intelligent factories, smarter robots, and more adaptive mobility systems. This shift could help define how industrial AI evolves across the next decade.
