The highly anticipated exhibition, Iris van Herpen: Sculpting the Senses, is set to debut at the Brooklyn Museum following its remarkable showing in Paris at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in 2023. This latest iteration builds on the previous exhibition's exploration of the intersection of fashion and art, showcasing van Herpen's innovative collections, including the striking Sympoeisis, which emphasizes her commitment to sustainable couture.
Renowned for her intricate designs that fuse cutting-edge technology with artistic vision, van Herpen employs techniques such as laser cutting and materials like Plexiglas. Her creations often reflect the beauty of natural forms and cosmic patterns. A standout moment from this year's Met Gala featured Olympic skier Eileen Gu in the "Airu" dress, which was adorned with plastic bubbles that released actual bubbles. Additionally, the "Living Algae" ensemble from her Sympoeisis collection incorporates real Pyrocystis lunula algae, known for its crescent shape and bioluminescence.
Van Herpen's work is deeply inspired by the complexities of the natural world and scientific principles. She expertly transforms concepts from diverse fields such as mathematics, marine biology, and astronomy into visionary fashion pieces that evoke the unseen structures of nature, from coral formations to the intricate systems of fungi.
The exhibition features over 140 haute couture designs alongside contributions from various artists, including Kenny Nguyen, Wim Delvoye, and Tara Donovan, enriching the experience with a multi-sensory soundscape composed by Salvador Breed.
Opening on May 16 and running until December 6, this exhibition promises to captivate audiences with its unique blend of art and science, showcasing how innovative fashion can inspire a deeper appreciation for nature's wonders.
