iPhone Duo Apps Turn a Foldable Screen Into a New Creative Space

A new wave of iPhone Duo apps uses its folding screens for streaming, travel, creative notes and retro-inspired play, hinting at fresh possibilities for mobile software.

iPhone Duo Apps Turn a Foldable Screen Into a New Creative Space

Apple's foldable iPhone Duo is inspiring developers to create apps that use its compact outer display and larger inner screen as distinct parts of the experience. The early examples suggest the device's appeal may depend as much on software creativity as on its hardware.

One device, different experiences

Netflix adapts as the Duo opens: users can browse short clips on the folded phone, then continue on the larger screen. Travel app Flighty uses the expanded display to show more of a flight's route, and its tent-style En Route Mode keeps flight progress visible while the device rests on a surface.

Other apps focus on playful or practical uses. Deck-Man recreates the feel of a cassette player, with album browsing and playback controls shaped around the phone's folding design. TypeDraw turns the device into a digital notebook for handwriting-style notes, sketches and page layouts.

Wakeout adjusts its movement-break activities to the Duo's different positions, while Sky Guide uses the open screen for a broader view of the night sky. Tiny Computers offers interactive recreations of classic computers, and MD Vinyl gives its record-player interface more room to play out.

There are also lighter touches: Pico Cam presents photos in a Polaroid-inspired style, and Toastie makes a game of preparing virtual toast. Together, these apps demonstrate how developers can build experiences around a device's form, rather than simply resizing existing software.

As more developers explore the foldable format, the iPhone Duo could help make adaptable, position-aware apps a more familiar part of mobile design.
