Fusion startup Inertia Enterprises says it has streamlined a key step in fuel-pellet production, reducing the process from several days to just a few hours. The company says the breakthrough could help make fusion power manufacturing more practical at scale.
The advance focuses on the fuel used in inertial fusion systems, where tiny pellets must be shaped with extreme precision before being compressed by lasers. Inertia says it has transformed what was once a slow, lab-style procedure into a process that can be repeated far more efficiently in an industrial setting.
According to the company, crystal growth that previously could take up to a week can now be completed in about 30 minutes, while a full pellet can be produced in roughly two to three hours. The work was developed with support from the National Ignition Facility at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, alongside a public-private partnership.
Inertia's approach is designed around a more powerful laser system than the one used at NIF, giving the startup more flexibility in pellet tolerances and helping speed up manufacturing. The company also says the faster process reduces the amount of tritium it needs to store at any one time, which supports a leaner and more efficient production model.
With plans for a commercial plant that could use multiple fuel pellets every second, Inertia is positioning manufacturing speed as a central part of fusion's path toward real-world deployment. If successful, the development could help shape a future where advanced clean-energy systems move closer to practical industrial use.
