India's mobile application market is experiencing remarkable growth, with in-app purchases exceeding $300 million in the first quarter, marking a 33% increase compared to the previous year, according to Sensor Tower. This surge is primarily driven by non-gaming applications, which alone accounted for over $200 million in revenue, reflecting a 44% year-over-year rise and an expanding share of total consumer spending.
The upward trend signifies a significant transformation in India's app ecosystem, where annual in-app purchase revenue has escalated from $520 million in 2021 to more than $1 billion projected for 2025, with expectations of reaching $1.25 billion this year. Although annual downloads have stabilized at around 25 billion, user engagement continues to deepen, indicating a growing readiness among consumers to invest in digital services.
However, a substantial portion of this spending is directed towards global platforms, with prominent names such as Google One, Facebook, ChatGPT, and YouTube leading the revenue charts. Domestic applications have made notable strides in the video streaming sector, with JioHotstar and SonyLIV emerging as key players. A similar trend is observed in download statistics, where ChatGPT, Instagram, and the Chinese app FreeReels dominate, alongside Indian favorites like Story TV, JioHotstar, and Meesho.
As noted by Donny Kristianto, principal market insights manager at Sensor Tower, while India's app download landscape has matured, monetization efforts are gaining momentum, driven by enhanced usage and a growing acceptance of digital payments. Despite these advancements, India remains a lower-spending market, generating approximately $0.03 per download, in contrast to over $0.20 in regions like Southeast Asia and Latin America.
While emerging categories are fueling growth, significant spending is still concentrated in established segments, particularly in productivity, social media, and video streaming apps, which dominate revenue rankings. Notably, video streaming represents nearly half of the top ten revenue-generating applications, showcasing its substantial monetization potential.
Interestingly, user demand is shifting, indicating further growth opportunities. Generative AI applications have seen a remarkable 69% increase in downloads year-over-year, with ChatGPT ranking among the top apps in both installations and revenue. India has consistently been ChatGPT's largest user base, while other AI applications are also gaining traction.
Short drama platforms are witnessing even faster growth, with downloads skyrocketing over 400%, led by apps like FreeReels. This trend illustrates that India's app market is still in the early stages of monetization, even as new categories broaden the scope of what users are willing to pay for.
