General Motors is rebuilding OnStar around an in-house AI assistant, bringing voice controls, connected-camera features and proactive vehicle support to the 2027 Cadillac Lyriq.

GM Reimagines OnStar as an AI-Powered In-Car Assistant

General Motors is reshaping OnStar around a new AI assistant, expanding the connected-car service beyond its traditional safety and roadside support role.

The OnStar AI Assistant is set to debut in the 2027 Cadillac Lyriq in the coming months, with additional GM vehicles expected to follow. GM also plans to introduce a new OnStar mobile app in 2027, replacing OnStar Guardian and the separate apps for Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet and GMC.

Developed in-house, the assistant is designed to offer drivers and passengers a more tailored, interactive experience. It will respond to voice commands for selected vehicle functions, including climate controls, and answer questions about vehicle features.

Connected vehicle cameras will also work with the software, enabling live views and safety recordings. Drivers can configure the system to activate when the vehicle detects a potential incident, such as an aggressive horn honk, and upload a recording to the OnStar app.

GM describes the new service as a connected intelligence platform intended to provide predictive, proactive support. The redesign reflects a broader shift in the auto industry, as software and AI become more deeply integrated into vehicle design and everyday driving.

As OnStar evolves from a support service into an in-car digital companion, its reach may help shape how drivers interact with their vehicles in the years ahead.
