General Motors plans to invest more than $2 billion in the Lansing region over the next several years, including $1.25 billion to prepare its Lansing Delta Township Assembly plant for future hybrid-electric vehicle production.
The automaker is working with the U.S. Department of Energy to restructure a previously awarded domestic manufacturing grant and redirect the funding toward hybrid production at the facility. GM says the grant's $500 million has not yet been released.
The plant currently builds gas-powered Buick Enclave, Chevrolet Traverse and GMC Acadia vehicles. GM has not announced when hybrid production will begin or which models will be included, and says it will share more details closer to launch.
The investment signals a broader expansion of GM's powertrain options alongside its existing battery-electric lineup. As automakers respond to changing customer preferences, adding hybrids could give drivers more ways to move toward electrified transportation.
The shift may help make lower-emission vehicle choices more widely available as the market continues to evolve.
