Gladstone Gallery has announced its representation of the estate of Pope.L, a groundbreaking artist renowned for his boundary-pushing performances and conceptual art that have significantly influenced contemporary art. The gallery is set to host its inaugural solo exhibition featuring Pope.L's work in New York in 2027.
In partnership with Modern Art in London and Vielmetter Los Angeles, who both represented Pope.L at the time of his passing in December 2023, Gladstone aims to continue the artist's legacy. The gallery's involvement reflects a commitment to honoring the profound impact Pope.L had during his lifetime and beyond.
Gavin Brown, a partner at Gladstone, expressed the gallery's excitement, stating, "Pope.L was a ground-breaking visionary artist in his lifetime, and since his untimely death, his vast impact and influence have come into higher relief and only continue to grow. We feel so privileged at Gladstone to be a part of continuing his legacy."
Pope.L's artistic journey spanned over four decades, often challenging conventional categorizations. His performances frequently explored the experiences of Black Americans, with notable works such as his "Crawls" series, which began in 1978. His most famous performance, conducted between 2001 and 2009, involved crawling the length of Manhattan dressed in a Superman suit, highlighting the struggles for freedom intertwined with the realities of racism.
In 2015, he presented a striking exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, featuring Trinket, a massive U.S. flag that was gradually torn apart by powerful fans throughout the exhibition. This work was acquired by MOCA in 2023, further solidifying Pope.L's place in the art world, alongside pieces held by prestigious institutions like the Art Institute of Chicago and the Museum of Modern Art.
Pope.L's contributions have been recognized in major exhibitions, including Documenta 14 in 2017 and the Whitney Biennials in 2002 and 2017, the latter of which earned him the esteemed Bucksbaum Award. His retrospective at MoMA in 2019 and a forthcoming exhibition at the Drawing Center in New York this spring will further showcase his innovative works.
