A Preview of Major Artworks Set to Shine at Art Basel 2026

As 2026 unfolds, the art world is buzzing with excitement following a series of significant events, including Art Basel Qatar and the Venice Biennale. The spotlight now turns to the flagship Art Basel fair in Basel, Switzerland, set to showcase an impressive array of artworks.

Art Basel retains its esteemed reputation for presenting exceptional museum-quality pieces, despite the growing prominence of fairs in cities like Paris and regions in the Gulf. This year, the fair has launched the Basel Exclusive initiative, encouraging exhibitors to withhold select high-profile artworks from pre-fair previews, aiming to create an exclusive buzz for attendees. Of the 240 exhibitors, 193 have embraced this initiative, ensuring that some standout pieces will be unveiled only at the event.

Among the notable galleries participating, Paris's Galerie 1900-2000 will feature works from renowned artists such as Francis Picabia, André Breton, and Leonora Carrington, with prices ranging from $5,000 to $600,000. The gallery's principal, David Fleiss, expressed optimism about the fair's atmosphere, emphasizing the need to draw visitors back to the galleries.

Another highlight comes from Gladstone Gallery, which is set to present a diverse collection, including a monumental work by Robert Rauschenberg and a vibrant piece by Keith Haring. The gallery's partner, Max Falkenstein, noted a positive market trend since last September, reinforcing the fair's reputation as a key player in the art scene.

White Cube, with its global presence, will showcase significant works from artists like Georg Baselitz and Antony Gormley. The gallery is also highlighting a new exhibition featuring Baselitz's early works, marking a poignant moment in the artist's legacy.

Additionally, Thaddaeus Ropac anticipates a strong demand at the fair, showcasing key pieces including a striking Warhol and a Marcel Duchamp sculpture. Ropac highlighted the unique opportunity for collectors to engage deeply with the art and its provenance.

Newcomer Berry Campbell will present a stellar lineup, including a 1968 painting by Lynne Drexler, marking their debut at Basel. Meanwhile, Hauser & Wirth will feature a significant abstract work by Gerhard Richter, further underscoring the fair's commitment to high-caliber art.

As the anticipation builds for Art Basel 2026, the event promises to be a transformative experience for collectors and art enthusiasts alike, reinforcing the fair's status as a pivotal platform for artistic expression and innovation.
