Frick Museum's Duck Family Wins Over New York Visitors

A mother mallard and her 11 ducklings have become an unexpected highlight at The Frick Collection, after being spotted in the museum's reflective pool in the 70th Street garden on Manhattan's Upper East Side.

The museum shared the family's visit on June 17, noting the ducklings' playful movement through the water and the careful support provided by its engineering team, which built a small ramp to help them return to land safely.

According to the museum, the mother duck had been seen near the pond for about six weeks before leading her brood across 5th Avenue to a nearby pond in Central Park. The visit also reflects a long-running seasonal pattern, with mallards occasionally nesting in the garden for more than two decades.

The Frick's reopening last spring after a major renovation has brought renewed attention to its spaces, and this latest moment adds a charming, nature-led chapter to its public life. It also shows how cultural institutions can create room for small urban wildlife stories to flourish alongside art and architecture.

As cities continue to blend green spaces with cultural landmarks, moments like this may inspire more thoughtful design for shared environments in the future.
