A French administrative court in Caen has ruled that Deauville city hall was wrong to remove a photograph from a local festival exhibition after it had been selected for display in the Sport Images Festival.
The image, taken by Associated Press photographer Jehad Alshrafi, shows a soccer match involving players from the Palestinian Ahli Gaza Club on a bright green synthetic field, with rubble visible in the background. It had been part of the festival's outdoor showcase, which highlights the cultural and social value of sport.
The removal prompted an emergency legal challenge from the Observatoire de la liberté de creation, which argued that the work should remain on view as an expression of artistic freedom. The court agreed, saying the city's decision was not a necessary or proportionate response to protect public order.
According to the ruling, the photograph must be restored before the festival ends on September 6, and the city must pay 1,000 euros in damages. The case underscores how photography can shape public conversation by linking sport, art, and lived reality in a single frame. In the future, such decisions may further define the role of cultural institutions as spaces for open expression.
