U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's Homeland Security Investigations unit in Tampa says it has recovered more than 22,000 ancient artifacts in Florida during a smuggling investigation described as one of the largest in the agency's history.
Officials said the collection will undergo a detailed identification process, with early assessments suggesting that some pieces may date back 1,000 to 5,000 years. The items are believed to come from ancient civilizations across Europe, Africa, the Levant, and the Eastern Mediterranean.
The recovered objects include coins, ceramic vessels, statues, weapons, jewelry, decorative items, and mosaic frames. Because antiquities cannot be verified with a simple field test, HSI works with university specialists to examine and authenticate each piece.
HSI Tampa acting Special Agent in Charge Micah McCombs said protecting cultural heritage is both a legal responsibility and a broader commitment to history. Special Agent Leanna Richardson also described the experience as a rare chance to handle objects that may have been created thousands of years ago.
The agency did not release details on where, when, or how the artifacts were seized. As the study continues, the case highlights how technology, scholarship, and enforcement can work together to preserve human heritage for future generations.
