Final Artist Commissions Announced for the Obama Presidential Center Ahead of June Opening

The highly anticipated Obama Presidential Center in Chicago is set to unveil its artistic vision as it announces the final round of artist commissions ahead of its June opening. Situated in the vibrant South Side, this cultural landmark aims to enrich the community with diverse artistic expressions.

The latest cohort of commissioned artists includes Njideka Akunyili Crosby, María Magdalena Campos-Pons, Jeffrey Gibson, Rashid Johnson, Hugo McCloud, Martin Puryear, Lorna Simpson, and Norman Teague. Each artist will contribute unique works that reflect the legacy of Barack and Michelle Obama.

Crosby is set to create a portrait of the former president and first lady, incorporating archival imagery, family albums, and cultural references, which will be prominently displayed in the Main Hall. Gibson's contribution consists of a series of 17 prints that pay homage to the political buttons from the Obama campaigns.

Campos-Pons's installation, titled Still Holding the Scent of Flowers, will recreate the once-famous White House Rose Garden and will be located near the museum's Oval Office exhibit. McCloud's piece, Hidden Reflection, will depict significant locations in the life of the former president, placed in the private dining room.

Valerie Jarrett, CEO of the Obama Foundation, expressed her vision for the center, stating, "We imagined the Obama Presidential Center as a place where art would deepen our visitors' curiosity and inspiration. These extraordinary artists will invite every visitor to see themselves as part of something bigger and inspire them to bring change home."

Martin Puryear's outdoor sculpture, Bending the Arc, is a tribute to the late civil rights leader John Lewis, featuring a 34-foot-long hand-carved wooden beam transformed into stainless steel. Teague has designed eight wooden benches to be placed throughout the center, enhancing the visitor experience.

Artists Johnson and Simpson will also present new works, including one of Johnson's mosaics for the teaching kitchen and a unique ice sculpture by Simpson for the seminar room in the private presidential suite.

This latest group of eight artists joins 22 previously announced contributors, culminating in a total of 30 new works for the center's expansive 19.3-acre campus. Their collective efforts will join those of renowned artists like Carrie Mae Weems, Julie Mehretu, and Mark Bradford, creating a rich tapestry of artistic expression.

Louise Bernard, founding director of the Obama Presidential Center Museum, highlighted the importance of these contributions, stating that they will anchor the center in an artistic legacy that embodies the values of openness, engagement, and respect for diverse narratives that shape the nation.
