Exploring Artistic Spaces: Insights from Two Visionary Artists

In the latest edition of "A View From the Easel," we delve into the creative environments of two inspiring artists, Lex Marie from Washington, DC, and Jade van der Mark from Paris, France. This series invites artists to share their unique workspaces and the influence these spaces have on their artistic journeys.

Lex Marie, Washington, DC

How long have you been working in this space?

Lex has established her studio at the school where she is currently pursuing her Master of Fine Arts (MFA), now halfway through her two-year program.

Describe an average day in your studio.

Lex's routine has shifted since starting her studies, now beginning her creative process around 9 am after dropping her son off at school. Previously, she favored late-night sessions. Lex often juggles multiple projects, allowing larger works to rest while she engages with smaller pieces. Music, particularly jazz and instrumental tracks, fills her studio, fostering a focused and serene atmosphere.

How does the space affect your work?

The smaller size of her current studio has prompted Lex to reconsider her artistic approach, occasionally leading her to think on a smaller scale. She actively reminds herself that her ideas can remain expansive despite the physical limitations of her workspace.

What do you love about your studio?

Lex cherishes the vibrant community of fellow artists surrounding her, which infuses her environment with energy and inspiration.

Jade van der Mark, Paris, France

How long have you been working in this space?

Jade has been cultivating her artistic practice in her studio for three years.

Describe an average day in your studio.

Jade's day begins on the metro, where she observes and collects the faces of commuters, using these encounters to inspire her paintings. She often works on several canvases simultaneously, each representing a unique aspect of her artistic vision.

How does the space affect your work?

For Jade, her studio transcends physical boundaries, becoming a living entity shaped by her emotions and creativity. It serves as a playground for her imagination, where she feels free to explore and experiment.

What do you love about your studio?

Jade appreciates the tranquility of her studio, allowing her to reconnect with her curiosity and creativity. It offers a sanctuary for processing the world around her, transforming chaos and beauty into meaningful art.

Both artists exemplify how the environment can profoundly influence creativity. Their experiences highlight the importance of community, personal reflection, and the ever-evolving nature of artistic practice. As artists continue to adapt their spaces and methods, the future of art promises to be vibrant and full of unexpected discoveries.
