Project Mirage's Dune is a compact three-button aluminum keypad designed to make everyday MacBook tasks faster and more intuitive. Plugging into a MacBook's USB-C port, the device shifts its functions depending on the app in use, turning the same three keys into meeting controls, productivity shortcuts, or developer actions.
In video calls, Dune can handle mic and camera toggles, while in tools like Excel, Sheets, or Chrome it can be mapped to commands such as copy, paste, refresh, or quick navigation. For developers, the keypad can also support workflows in environments like VS Code and GitHub, including actions tied to pull requests.
The device is built to fit specific MacBook models closely, creating a flush setup without extra bulk. It draws power directly from the laptop, so no separate battery or charger is needed. Current support covers M2 Air or later and M1 Pro or later MacBook models running macOS 15 Sequoia or newer.
Dune also comes with a companion app for assigning shortcuts on an app-by-app or system-wide basis. Users can connect keys to keyboard commands, app launches, URLs, or custom workflows. The app can sync with a calendar to surface upcoming meetings and offer one-tap actions such as joining or sending a quick delay message.
For advanced users, the system supports Python scripts, while Claude Desktop integration lets people describe a shortcut in plain language and have it configured automatically. A marketplace for community-built skills adds another layer, pointing toward a more flexible hardware-software ecosystem.
With its mix of compact design, adaptive controls, and AI-assisted customization, Dune reflects the growing shift toward smarter personal productivity tools that may shape the next generation of work interfaces.
