OpenAI has announced a new integration between ChatGPT Health and Epic's electronic health record system, opening the door for clinicians to import patient data and use AI as a faster clinical companion. Epic supports records for more than 325 million patients, making the connection especially significant for large-scale care environments.
With the update, healthcare professionals can review appointment notes, lab results, medications, and specialist documentation in a more streamlined way. The tool can also help summarize records, compare changes over time, and prepare for upcoming visits. In some deployments, ChatGPT can be accessed directly inside EHR workflows, supporting pre-visit review and timeline building without leaving the patient chart.
OpenAI said the integration is designed with read-only access, meaning the system can view records but does not write anything back into them. The company is also introducing a new Healthcare Public Data plugin that can pull from sources such as ClinicalTrials.gov, CMS Coverage, RxNorm, DailyMed, and PubMed to help organize trial criteria, medication identifiers, coverage details, and provider information.
For organizations operating under a Business Associate Agreement, OpenAI says ChatGPT Work, Codex, apps, and connectors can be used in compliant workplace settings. The company also reported that it gathered feedback from more than 4,300 physician responses across 27 clinical use cases, with 99.1% of answers rated safe in its review process.
As AI tools continue to move closer to everyday clinical routines, this kind of integration could help shape a more connected, data-aware future for healthcare.
