Metabolic dysfunction associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is the most prevalent chronic liver condition worldwide, impacting approximately one-third of adults. This condition is closely linked to obesity, hypertension, and insulin resistance.
While doctors often recommend lifestyle modifications like healthier diets and increased physical activity, sustaining these changes can be difficult. Furthermore, effective medications are limited, prompting researchers to explore innovative treatment avenues.
Mechanisms of Action for CBD and CBG
The study utilized advanced scientific methodologies to uncover that CBD and CBG do more than merely mitigate fat accumulation; they enhance liver cell functionality through a process termed "metabolic remodeling."
A significant finding was the increase in phosphocreatine levels, a molecule that serves as an emergency energy source for liver cells under metabolic stress, such as that induced by a high-fat diet. This is particularly noteworthy, as the liver typically does not heavily rely on this energy reserve.
Enhancing the Liver's Cleanup Processes
Additionally, the research indicated that CBD and CBG can reactivate cathepsins--enzymes that function within lysosomes, acting as recycling centers for cells. By boosting cathepsin activity, liver cells can more effectively process and eliminate harmful fats and waste products.
The researchers noted significant reductions in damaging lipid molecules, including triglycerides and ceramides, which are particularly detrimental due to their association with insulin resistance and liver inflammation.
Distinct Metabolic Benefits of CBD and CBG
While both compounds exhibited positive effects, the study highlighted their differing impacts on metabolic health. Both CBD and CBG contributed to stabilizing blood sugar levels and enhancing glucose metabolism, but CBG demonstrated a more pronounced effect on several metabolic markers. It notably reduced body fat mass and enhanced insulin sensitivity more effectively than CBD, along with lowering total cholesterol and "bad" LDL cholesterol levels.
"Our findings reveal a novel mechanism through which CBD and CBG improve hepatic energy and lysosomal function," states Prof. Joseph Tam. "This dual metabolic remodeling enhances liver lipid management, positioning these compounds as potential therapeutic agents for MASLD."
