Boston Dynamics, the renowned robotics firm based in Massachusetts, is undergoing a significant leadership transition. Robert Playter has officially announced his resignation as the company's chief executive in a memo circulated internally.
Amanda McMaster, the current chief financial officer, will temporarily assume the role of CEO while the company searches for a new leader. This move marks the end of Playter's impressive 30-year tenure at Boston Dynamics, where he previously held various positions, including vice president of engineering and chief operating officer.
Founded in 1992 as a spinoff from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology by Marc Raibert, Boston Dynamics has a rich history. The company was acquired by Google's parent company, Alphabet, in 2013, before being sold to SoftBank in 2017. Most recently, Hyundai became its owner in 2021.
Under Playter's leadership, Boston Dynamics gained recognition for its innovative quadruped robot, Spot, which was commercialized in 2020. The company also introduced Atlas, a cutting-edge humanoid robot, showcasing its commitment to advancing robotics technology.
