Blue Origin's New Glenn Rocket Launches but Misses Target Orbit for Customer Satellite

Blue Origin, the aerospace venture founded by Jeff Bezos, achieved a significant milestone by successfully reusing its New Glenn rocket for the first time on Sunday. However, the mission faced a setback as the rocket failed to deliver the communications satellite for AST SpaceMobile into the intended orbit.

AST SpaceMobile reported that the upper stage of the New Glenn rocket placed the BlueBird 7 satellite into an orbit that was "lower than planned." Although the satellite successfully detached and activated, its current altitude is insufficient for operational functionality, necessitating its de-orbiting to safely burn up in Earth's atmosphere.

Fortunately, the financial impact of this satellite loss is mitigated by AST SpaceMobile's insurance policy. The company is already working on subsequent BlueBird satellites, which are expected to be ready within a month. AST SpaceMobile has multiple contracts beyond Blue Origin and anticipates launching an additional 45 satellites by the end of 2026.

This incident marks a notable challenge for Blue Origin's New Glenn program, which only began its flight operations in January 2025 after extensive development. This was the second mission involving a customer payload, following a successful launch of twin spacecraft to Mars for NASA last November. Blue Origin has yet to provide further comments regarding this mission.

The implications of this launch failure may extend beyond immediate commercial interests. Blue Origin is striving to secure its role as a key launch provider for NASA's Artemis missions aimed at lunar exploration. The space agency, alongside the previous administration, has emphasized the importance of successful lunar landings by the end of the current presidential term, as part of broader goals to return humans to the moon.

Blue Origin's CEO, Dave Limp, has expressed strong commitment to assisting NASA in expediting its lunar ambitions, stating that the company "will move heaven and Earth" to achieve this goal. Recently, Blue Origin completed testing of its lunar lander, which it plans to launch later this year, although it opted for the AST SpaceMobile satellite for this particular mission.

The third launch of New Glenn appeared to proceed smoothly, with the rocket lifting off from Cape Canaveral, Florida, at 7:35 a.m. local time. It marked the first reflight of a previously flown booster, which successfully landed on a drone ship after its mission. However, two hours post-launch, Blue Origin announced that the satellite was placed in an "off-nominal orbit," a term indicating a deviation from expected parameters.

In contrast to Blue Origin's proactive approach, SpaceX has primarily focused on testing its Starship rockets with dummy payloads, illustrating different strategies in the competitive landscape of commercial spaceflight.

As Blue Origin navigates this challenge, the future of its New Glenn program remains pivotal for both the company and NASA's ambitious space exploration plans, highlighting the dynamic nature of the aerospace industry.
