The Baltimore Museum of Art has added about 118 works to its collection over the past six months, bringing together purchases, gifts, and promised gifts that reflect a wider global perspective and a stronger connection to Baltimore's creative community.
A major part of the expansion comes from Constance R. Caplan, a longtime supporter and former board chair, whose donation includes 64 works. The group features artists such as Janine Antoni, Bernd and Hilla Becher, Fernanda Gomes, Robert Morris, Stephen Parrino, Richard Tuttle, Lee Ufan, Jack Whitten, and Lisa Yuskavage.
The museum also welcomed paintings, sculptures, ceramics, photographs, and works on paper by artists including Amy Sherald, Rina Banerjee, Oswaldo Guayasamín, Louis Fratino, Reverend Joyce McDonald, Oumar Ka, and Siphiwe Nala. Together, the additions span multiple eras, materials, and cultural traditions.
Asma Naeem, the BMA's Dorothy Wagner Wallis Director, said the acquisitions reflect the museum's focus on collection diversification, meaningful partnerships, and support for Baltimore's artistic ecosystem. The new works highlight how museums can grow as living cultural platforms, connecting local voices with global art histories.
In the years ahead, this kind of collection-building may help shape more inclusive and future-facing museum experiences.
