ARTnews has released the 37th edition of its annual Top 200 Collectors issue, offering a detailed look at the people, ideas and institutions shaping today's art-collecting landscape.
The edition explores significant acquisitions made over the past year, including Emily Wei and Mitchell Rales's collection of Kerry James Marshall's three-part work Haul, Outbound, and Cove. Created for the artist's Royal Academy survey, the monumental installation reflects Marshall's ambitious approach to history, narrative and contemporary painting.
Collecting Beyond Ownership
Collectors were also invited to imagine a work they would choose from any museum collection. Their selections ranged from landmark paintings by Hieronymus Bosch, Édouard Manet and Pablo Picasso to influential land-art projects including Robert Smithson's Spiral Jetty and Walter De Maria's The Lightning Field.
A recurring theme is the evolving meaning of collecting. Cheech Marin highlighted the value of sharing art publicly, reflecting on his donation of John Valadez's Pool Party to the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego. The gesture underlines how private collections can expand cultural access when works enter public institutions.
The issue also considers museum donations, site-specific commissions, art-world leadership and the care of collections. Practical guidance from conservation specialists places particular emphasis on preserving artworks for future generations through attentive storage, handling and long-term planning.
By bringing together collectors, artists, museums and conservation experts, the annual edition presents art collecting as an active form of cultural stewardship. Its wider impact may lie in encouraging a future where collecting supports not only ownership, but also preservation, education and public engagement.
