Artistic Reflections: Insights from Two Unique Studios

Welcome to the latest edition of "A View From the Easel," where artists share their creative spaces and inspirations. This week, we delve into the experiences of two talented artists: Sofie Koenig from Bloomington, Indiana, and Marissa Robin Abendano from Manhattan, New York.

Sofie Koenig, Bloomington, Indiana

How long have you been working in this space? Seven months.

Describe an average day in your studio. I typically start my day around 8:30 AM, aiming to be in the studio by 10 AM. Working late tends to hinder my creativity, so I prioritize early sessions lasting from three to six hours. Immersed in my work, I often lose track of time, accompanied by music that fuels my artistic expression. Standing while I paint enhances my dynamism, allowing me to juggle multiple projects with ease.

How does the space affect your work? My studio is quite compact, which complicates large-scale projects and studio visits. However, the abundant natural light is a tremendous asset. Sharing this space fosters collaboration and inspiration among colleagues.

How do you interact with the environment outside your studio? As a part of Indiana University's vibrant art community, I enjoy wandering through the studio, observing others' work, which continually sparks my creativity.

What do you love about your studio? The sense of community is truly special. My peers are always ready to lend a hand when I face creative blocks, and I cherish the memories we've built together.

What do you wish were different? While the windows provide fantastic lighting, they can make the studio quite cold during winter, which can be challenging.

What is your favorite local museum? The Newfields Art Museum in Indianapolis is a fantastic destination, albeit a bit of a drive.

What is your favorite art material to work with? Oil paint is my primary medium, and I adore its unique personality and texture.

Marissa Robin Abendano, Manhattan, New York

How long have you been working in this space? Approximately eight years, although my creative process remains consistent regardless of the location.

Describe an average day in your studio. I rise early, around 4 AM, enjoying black coffee and reading poetry. After completing household chores, I settle down with green tea to focus on my artwork. I often concentrate on one main piece while exploring material experiments, occasionally listening to audiobooks for inspiration.

How does the space affect your work? My studio is a personal sanctuary, a reflection of my thoughts and creations. Each space I inhabit becomes an extension of my identity as an artist.

How do you interact with the environment outside your studio? My neighborhood is rich with artistic inspiration. Whether strolling through Central Park or Fifth Avenue, I find endless ideas and stories to inform my work.

What do you love about your studio? It's a haven where I can immerse myself in the creative process, allowing for experimentation and transformation in my paintings.

What do you wish were different? Occasionally, I fantasize about a distraction-free space, but ultimately, my studio is my home, and I wouldn't change much about it.

What is your favorite local museum? The Museum of Modern Art is conveniently nearby and offers delightful outings.

What is your favorite art material to work with? Acrylic paint is my go-to, providing a versatile foundation for my mixed media works, allowing me to express the dualities of existence.
