Architectural Competition for Louvre 'New Renaissance' Project Set to Relaunch in May

The Louvre Museum's architectural competition is set to relaunch in May, aiming for a transformative renovation led by President Macron.

Architectural Competition for Louvre 'New Renaissance' Project Set to Relaunch in May

The much-anticipated architectural competition for the Louvre Museum's renovation, initially delayed due to staff unrest and the timing of French municipal elections, is now poised to resume in mid-May. According to Le Figaro, the jury responsible for selecting the architects will convene on May 13 to evaluate five shortlisted proposals as part of a significant $778 million renovation initiative championed by President Emmanuel Macron.

Sources indicate that the jury's meeting comes after speculation about potential delays linked to staffing shortages and pressing infrastructure demands, heightened by recent leadership changes following a notable jewel heist at the museum. The shortlisted firms were originally given a tight deadline to refine their designs by late January, only to face an indefinite postponement of the jury's presentations.

With a sense of urgency, the Louvre's new president, Christophe Leribault, alongside Culture Minister Catherine Pégard, recently visited the Préfecture de Paris et d'Île-de-France to review the architects' scale models. The final design is yet to be determined, but Pégard has suggested that some elements of the plan will undergo revisions, while others will be reinforced. Macron has envisioned a "New Louvre" to be completed by 2031, although the practicality of this timeline remains under scrutiny.

The jury, led by Marc Guillaume, the prefect of Paris, is composed of a diverse group of civil servants, architects, and museum professionals. Notable jurors include the mayor of Paris and prominent architects such as Anne Démians and Sou Fujimoto. The architecture firms in contention are Amanda Levete Architects, architecturestudio, Dubuisson Architecture, and STUDIOS Architecture.

This ambitious project, first announced by Macron in January 2025, aims to alleviate the overcrowding that affects the Louvre, which attracts around 9 million visitors each year. The renovation plan includes a new entrance and critical updates to aging infrastructure, as well as the controversial addition of a 33,000-square-foot exhibition space dedicated to the Mona Lisa. The museum's budget for 2026 allocates $116 million for preliminary studies related to the renovation and $17.5 million for technical maintenance, with only $2.1 million earmarked for the safety of its artworks.

In January, over 350 Louvre staff members staged a walkout, advocating for prioritization of essential technical upgrades and maintenance over the relocation of the Mona Lisa to a new gallery. This protest followed a series of internal challenges, including a leaked memo detailing significant structural issues within the museum and the aftermath of a high-profile theft that led to the resignation of former president Laurence des Cars.

As the Louvre embarks on this transformative journey, the outcome of the architectural competition will not only reshape the museum's physical space but also set a precedent for future cultural projects worldwide.
