Apple Photos' New AI Tools Make Editing Smarter and More Natural

Apple's upgraded Photos app brings smarter Clean Up, Extend, and Reframe tools, showing how AI can make mobile photo editing more natural and flexible.

Apple Photos' New AI Tools Make Editing Smarter and More Natural

Apple is refining its Photos app with a new set of Apple Intelligence features, and the biggest leap appears to be in image editing. The upgraded tools focus on making photo cleanup, expansion, and perspective changes feel more natural and more useful in everyday use.

Clean Up gets a major upgrade

The most noticeable improvement is Clean Up. In earlier versions, the tool could remove simple objects, but it often struggled with shadows and realistic background reconstruction. Now Apple uses a hybrid system: small edits are handled on-device, while more complex tasks can be processed through Apple's cloud-based Foundation models. That shift helps the app rebuild surfaces, lighting, and surrounding details with far better consistency.

Users can access the feature by opening a photo, tapping Edit, then selecting Tools and Clean Up. The default Auto mode balances speed and quality, while High Quality sends the task to Apple's cloud models for stronger results.

Extend and Reframe add creative flexibility

The new Extend tool can widen a frame and fill missing space around a photo, making off-center shots feel more balanced. It works especially well in scenes with clear visual patterns, such as interiors or landscapes, where the AI can infer what belongs beyond the original frame.

Reframe offers another layer of control by letting users adjust the angle or perspective after the shot is taken. It is best suited for subtle corrections, since stronger changes can still look unnatural, especially around faces. Even so, it points toward a future where mobile editing becomes more adaptive, intuitive, and visually intelligent.

As Apple continues to improve these beta features, the Photos app is moving closer to a new standard for AI-assisted creativity on mobile devices.
