Anthro Energy has started construction on a new manufacturing facility in Louisville, Kentucky, designed to produce battery materials at a scale that could support more than 300,000 electric vehicles.

The plant's planned annual output includes 25 gigawatt-hours of electrolytes, but its wider significance lies in strengthening the U.S. battery supply chain and supporting the transition toward solid-state batteries.

Set to begin production in 2028, the facility is intended to provide domestic, high-spec materials for manufacturers seeking reliable alternatives in a fast-growing sector. Anthro says the site's location offers strong logistics advantages, with access to a large share of U.S. battery production within a 12-hour drive.

The project is backed by a $24.9 million award from the U.S. Department of Energy, along with $18.4 million in investment tax credits and $2.3 million in Kentucky incentives tied to the creation of 110 permanent jobs.

Anthro's material, Proteus, is designed to work with existing production lines while helping enable solid- and semi-solid-state battery designs. The company says its process allows the electrolyte to flow into the cell before hardening, creating a stronger structure that may improve durability and flexibility.

If the technology scales as planned, it could support not only electric vehicles, but also drones and robotics. In the broader battery landscape, the Louisville factory represents a step toward more resilient manufacturing and a more advanced energy future.
