Amoako Boafo Brings His Studio to Life in Los Angeles

In a vibrant corner of Los Angeles, artist Amoako Boafo showcases his latest exhibition, I Bring Home With Me, at Roberts Projects. This collection serves as a bridge to his roots in Accra, Ghana, presenting a refreshing escape from the bustling atmosphere of Hollywood. Through 22 captivating portraits, including two self-portraits, Boafo employs his unique technique of collaged finger trails, moving away from traditional brushstrokes to create a tactile experience that immerses viewers in his world.

This exhibition marks several milestones for Boafo in the United States. It introduces his innovative use of embroidery in portraiture, adding depth and texture to his subjects. Additionally, it represents his inaugural collaboration with Glenn DeRoche from DeRoche Projects, an architectural firm based in Accra. DeRoche has recreated a scale model of Boafo's studio within the exhibition space, initially intended to be crafted from Ghanaian teakwood. However, due to international tariff challenges, local plywood was utilized, painted black, to maintain the aesthetic integrity of the installation.

During a recent visit, the atmosphere of the gallery had evolved, enriched by the time allowed for the installation to resonate. A subtle, earthy aroma filled the space, creating an inviting ambiance that encouraged deeper engagement with the artwork. Boafo's distinctive approach to painting, where he uses his fingers to render his subjects' features, enhances the emotional connection viewers feel with each portrait. The diverse palette of blues, blacks, browns, and grays captures the richness of deep skin tones, making the title of the exhibition resonate profoundly.

The exhibition prominently features portraits of women, embodying strength and resilience. These artworks transform the gallery into a welcoming space, fostering a sense of community and belonging. Boafo's portrayal of femininity and homemaking is particularly poignant, as it reflects the experiences of those within the diaspora, who recreate their sense of home across different landscapes.

Through this artistic journey, Boafo invites audiences to sit within his recreated home, engaging with the individuals depicted in his portraits. The exhibition continues to challenge perceptions of identity and belonging, making a significant statement about the power of art to bridge cultural divides.

Amoako Boafo: I Bring Home With Me is on display at Roberts Projects (442 South La Brea Avenue, Hancock Park, Los Angeles) until March 21. This exhibition, organized by the gallery, underscores the importance of cultural dialogue through art.
