An upcoming exhibition in New York City will bring together 25 works by artist Aminah Brenda Lynn Robinson, whose imaginative books, dolls and textiles preserve personal memories and community histories. Beaded and Bound, presented by Fort Gansevoort in collaboration with the Columbus Museum of Art, opens November 19 and runs through January 16.

Raised in Columbus, Ohio, Robinson drew on the people and places around her, including Poindexter Village, where she grew up. Her work combines writing, painting, drawing, embroidery and appliqué, transforming familiar materials into richly detailed visual narratives. Buttons, beads, fabric and found objects appear alongside a handmade substance she called "hogmawg," made from ingredients including clay, leaves, twigs, mud and glue.

Robinson described her sculptural books as "RagGonNon": interactive works that could evolve and invite different interpretations. That approach is evident in pieces such as Women in Poindexter Village, Button Beaded Book, which recalls residents of her childhood community and includes a tribute to her mother.

Other works connect individual relationships with broader cultural spaces. A Holy Place: The Elijah Pierce Barbershop honors Robinson's friend and fellow Columbus artist while evoking the barbershop as a place of connection in African American communities. Her beaded dolls and books similarly combine intimate stories with shared histories.

By carrying community memory into tactile, inventive forms, Robinson's work offers a model for how art can keep local stories present and accessible to future generations.
