Amazon is supporting plans for a 960-megawatt nuclear power plant in Indiana and is set to become its first customer. The proposed facility would be built at a former coal plant site south of Terre Haute.
The project would use 12 Xe-100 small modular reactors designed by X-energy. American Electric Power would operate the plant, with electricity supplied to the public grid as well as Amazon's data centers.
The agreement expands an existing partnership between Amazon and X-energy. The companies have said they aim to develop a total of 5 gigawatts of new nuclear generating capacity in the United States by 2039.
The Indiana project remains at the planning stage. Its schedule depends in part on X-energy's progress with its first planned power plant in Texas, where the company is seeking a construction permit from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
If delivered, the project could show how small modular reactors might contribute to reliable grid power while meeting the growing electricity needs of data centers.
